Live Oak Trees in Central Texas

Live oak in Austin is not one tree — it is two species, and which one you are standing under changes what you should do about it. The escarpment live oak, Quercus fusiformis, is the Central Texas native. The coastal live oak, Quercus virginiana, is the one tree farms prefer to grow. They differ on lifespan, on structure, on roots, and on oak wilt.

That is not botanical trivia. It decides whether the tree is closer to a 300-year asset or an 80-year one, whether it needed pruning it never got, and how much to worry when a neighbor says “oak wilt.”

Our own planting sheet lists live oak under both tall shade trees and screening trees. There is no height, hardiness, sun or water row on purpose: if we have not seen it hold up in Central Texas, we would rather leave the cell empty than fill it from a reference book.

Three hundred years is long even by tree standards — the normal expectation for a good Central Texas tree is sixty to eighty years, so the escarpment native is the outlier, not the standard.

And the coastal tree is not a bad tree. Its faster growth is exactly why it needs much more structural pruning when it is young. Without that it develops included bark, where two stems grow so tightly together that bark gets trapped in the union instead of wood — and those unions fail. The way I put it: “If you pick out the right tree, plant it correctly, and do the right structural pruning when it’s young, it can turn out to be a really great tree. I wouldn’t say that’s the norm.”

Roots are the difference a homeowner is most likely to feel underfoot. The coastal tree is the “notorious” one. Naturally occurring escarpment live oaks tend not to have surface roots — very different from the coastal variety. Both of those words carry weight. Tend to is a tendency, not a guarantee. And naturally occurring means a tree that came up wild, which is not the same tree as a nursery-grown escarpment live oak going into a yard, so I would not read it as a promise about the one you are about to buy. It does not change where I would put a new one: twenty feet off a house, a driveway or a sidewalk.

The value ranking runs opposite to the safety ranking: the escarpment native is the three-hundred-year jewel and the species oak wilt moves through, while the coastal tree is the more available one and the eighty-year tree that needs work when it is young.

Is that a live oak or a gum bumelia?

Gum bumelia (also called chittamwood) is a tree people mix up with live oak here. Two things settle it from the ground.

Gum bumelia loses its leaves in the fall. A live oak holds its foliage through winter and drops it in late February — so a bare tree standing among leafy live oaks in December is not a live oak.

Gum bumelia has thorns. Live oak has none.

I will give you a third tell and grade it honestly: the leaves are “a bit different if you look close.” That is corroboration, not the decider. Use the thorns.

How you buy one — ask about the seed source

This is the part no reference site gives you, because encyclopedias are not buying trees.

You can find escarpment live oaks in nurseries. In my experience in the trade since 1993 it is rare — “you have to know who and what to ask for, and trust that that person knows what they’re talking about and can give you a real answer about seed source.” Tree farms prefer to grow the coastal tree because it grows a little faster, which makes it better business. That is not a conspiracy; it is an incentive, and it quietly decides what ends up in your yard.

So the question to ask when you buy a live oak is: what is the seed source? The answer tells you which of two trees you are putting in the ground for the next century.

Something else can arrive with the tree. Repotting at the farm often buries the root flare a few inches before the tree ever leaves the nursery, so part of the job at planting is correcting something the tree farm already did. A buried root flare is worth finding before the tree goes in the hole — that, and species selection, is most of what a tree planting visit is for.

If you want shade in five years, plant something else

This is the number that decides the purchase.

“Plant a forty-five gallon Mexican sycamore and in as little as five years you’ll feel like you’ve got the beginnings of a nice shade tree in your front yard. With a live oak, in five years that tree is going to have barely grown much — you’re really looking at ten to fifteen years before you feel like you have the beginnings of a new shade tree. So — a good tree, not bad. But if quick shade is your goal, it’s going to let you down.”

Live oaks are slow, and slowest in the first three to five years. Once they establish they can develop a decent growth rate — but a lot of people looking for a shade tree do not want to spend those first years watching almost nothing happen. A bare yard is the wrong place to start with a live oak.

It helps to know where live oak sits on the scale. Slow is live oak. Fast is Mexican sycamore. Everything else sits in the middle“anything you plant from a nursery is gonna have a decently good growth rate except for the live oak.”

Where to plant a live oak in Central Texas

Two questions get confused here, and the numbers look contradictory until you separate them.

Planting a new one. I would put a new escarpment live oak — Q. fusiformistwenty feet from a house, a driveway or a sidewalk, and a new coastal live oak — Q. virginianatwenty to twenty-five feet. Both are planting distances: how far to dig the hole from something that is already built. The coastal tree is the one that is “notorious” for surface roots, and they get more problematic as the tree ages.

Building near one that is already there. Different problem, different answer: as close as ten feet to an established native live oak is okay. That tree already owns the site, so the question is preservation, not a conflict that has not happened yet. Surface roots on an older tree can be pruned — “the tree will tolerate the root pruning as long as it’s done in a mindful way” — but that is a consideration, not a free pass.

What you will not get from us is a number for spacing trees from each other, and the refusal is the useful part: “The closer you put them together, the more instant gratification you get, the more long-term problems you get… budget is a part of that. There’s not a silver bullet answer.”

The last siting question is oak wilt, and it is genuinely local. In a neighborhood with active oak wilt concerns I steer people toward a Monterrey oak or a chinquapin oak instead. That is a local judgment — it is what an arborist knows from working the area, and much of why the site visit is worth having.

Oak wilt on live oaks — the danger first, then the numbers

Live oaks are the species most affected by oak wilt here, and the reason is that their roots are connected. It is primarily the native escarpment tree. Where those grow as interconnected stands the root systems are grafted together, and oak wilt is a vascular disease — it moves through the plumbing, tree to tree. When it gets into an area, “it can be catastrophic.” Nothing below softens that.

And it is not nearly as prevalent as the internet would have you believe. “Nine out of ten times that I get called to an oak wilt site, there’s some other problem going on and it’s just been misdiagnosed” — a call-outcome rate from my own practice, not a study. When a declining live oak is not oak wilt, it is usually weed-and-feed damage, a buried root flare, an abrupt irrigation change, or two hard springs stacked on each other.

The two species differ here, and the difference is real but limited. The coastal live oak grafts into those native root networks far less often, which is why oak wilt can move through an area and leave planted trees standing. That is meaningfully lower risk, not an exemption — the two can graft across species lines, it is just far less common, and they hybridize besides.

None of that changes what we do. There are published rules about when to prune, cleaning tools and painting wounds, and I follow them: “I personally believe some of these rules are antiquated and not effective, but they are still published rules that need to be followed.” Our full position is on the oak wilt page.

What a live oak does in spring

This blindsides new owners, and it is completely normal.

Live oaks drop their leaves in late February and early March, when every deciduous tree around them is making new ones, and the new leaves come out immediately behind the old ones. Then it gets messier: the catkins that make the pollen emerge, the pollen arrives as a green dusting over everything, and then the catkins themselves drop. Three messes back to back, at the exact time of year you want to be outside.

The whole leaf-out runs six to eight weeks, and individual trees run two to three weeks apart — early trees finish in mid to late March, later ones not until early April, so a tree behind the one across the street is still normal. One detail explains most of the panic calls: “most people don’t even see that the foliage is coming on — you just see the catkins developing.” The tree is already leafing out; you are just not looking at the part doing it. (Live oaks also sometimes turn color, usually in winter rather than fall — that is senescence, not a problem.)

That predictability is worth more than it sounds. “Live oaks leaf out — almost you could set your calendar by them.” An ash or an American elm leafs out on whatever the weather is doing; on a live oak you can predict the window, which is what makes a timed treatment program a real product rather than a spray truck on a subscription.

Caring for a live oak

Maintenance is genuinely low. Deadwood and clearance, and beyond that whatever shaping you want for your own reasons — the tree does not need it. They tolerate landscaping and construction with pretty minimal considerations, they are very responsive to treatment when something goes wrong, and they pass enough light to keep turf underneath. In my words, “a pretty flexible backbone to the landscape.” Litter is not a reason to pass on one. Leaf drop and acorns are really an argument that a cedar elm is a little cleaner — a live oak is not intolerable.

Pruning splits by species and by condition, and this is where the common name has done real harm.

  • A sound mature native escarpment live oak gets deadwood and clearance. That is all — no reduction pruning. The worst outcome in this whole cluster is an over-pruned native: “when you over-thin them and scalp them, they just don’t recover and turn back into the trees that they were. There’s literally nothing that you can do. There’s no amount of money you can spend. Trees don’t die overnight, but they just never have the beauty that they did before.” But that is the form, not the tree. Vigor comes back in five to seven years; form never does“the tree needs five to seven years worth of growth to get back to the health and vigor it had before.” The way back is soil and moisture management — mulch, compost, a fertilizer regimen, an audit of the irrigation. “There might be some light pruning in two to three years, but it’s somewhat unpredictable, and it’s gonna be a while.” The line that matters most: “the solution is not to prune more.” That recovery work is what the tree care program is for.
  • A coastal live oak with structural defects is a different job, and worth doing. At forty with included bark there is real runway left, so I intervene: proper reduction pruning, sometimes cables — and cables only where “the problematic tree needs to have no significant targets within the fall zone,” because “the hardware isn’t fail safe” — and a multi-year program of structural improvement rather than a single visit. I am more cautious about hardware than I used to be — “I used to favour cables more than I do now” — so the durable part is the pruning.
  • A young live oak of either species should be getting structural pruning now — the cheapest version of all of this, and the one nobody thinks to buy.

Hypoxylon canker is the most destructive disease live oaks actually get. It is associated with heat and drought stress, which Central Texas supplies every summer. The fungus lives quietly in healthy oak tissue and turns pathogenic only when the tree is stressed, which is why there is no fungicide for it — the management is stress reduction. Put more usefully: “especially in the summer when people move and turn off irrigation systems.” If you have just bought a house with big live oaks, find the irrigation and keep it running.

Foliar diseases — rust, powdery mildew, anthracnose — exist on live oak, but we do not see them all that much here.

Spring caterpillars look far worse than they are. Half a dozen kinds eat live oak leaves in spring, and the little green ones hanging from strings are prolific: “it’s fairly alarming, the number of worms hanging from web strings in your yard.” Most of the time they are cosmetic. Where a tree is defoliated year after year, control is generally pretty easy as long as it is well timed in the spring. (Leaf roller aphids are a separate spring visitor with the same verdict.)

Watering, mulch and keeping weed control away from the root zone are yours to do and they are most of the battle. Where it stops being a homeowner job is the timed spring and fall treatments, the structural pruning, and anything needing a diagnosis — that is what the tree care program is for.

Our take

Outside a neighborhood with active oak wilt concerns, the escarpment live oak is worth the trouble of finding. Ask about the seed source and be willing to wait for the right tree.

If your yard is bare, start with something else and add the live oak once you have canopy. The wait only costs you while it is the only tree you have.

If you already have one, you have a treasure that does not ask much of you — deadwood, clearance, water in the bad summers, and somebody who knows which of the two species they are looking at before they start cutting. The common name is the problem. The tree is not.

Why is my live oak dropping its leaves in the spring?

Because that is when live oaks drop them. They are a deciduous hardwood that holds its foliage through winter — semi evergreen — and sheds the old leaves in late February and early March, right when every other deciduous tree is making new ones. It throws a lot of new owners for a loop. The new leaves come out immediately behind the old ones.

How fast do live oak trees grow?

Slowly, and especially so in the first three to five years. Plant a 45-gallon Mexican sycamore and in as little as five years you will feel like you have the beginnings of a nice shade tree; plant a 45-gallon live oak and in five years it will have barely grown much — you are really looking at ten to fifteen years. Once it establishes it can develop a decent growth rate. Live oak is the slow end of the scale for the trees we plant, and Mexican sycamore is the fast end; almost everything else sits in the middle.

How far from a house should I plant a live oak?

It depends which live oak. I would plant a new escarpment live oak (Quercus fusiformis) twenty feet from a house, driveway or sidewalk, and a new coastal live oak (Quercus virginiana) twenty to twenty-five feet — the coastal tree is notorious for surface roots and they get more problematic as the tree ages. Both of those are distances for putting a new tree in the ground near something already built. Building near a live oak that is already there is a different question with a different answer — as close as ten feet to an established native is okay.

Are live oaks evergreen?
