Construction tree protection in Austin is site work: fencing the root zones before the machines arrive, mulch and ground protection where traffic has to cross, air-spading around utility trenches and pier holes, and the fertilizing, pruning and permitted removals a build needs. The tree protection plan itself belongs to your design team — we audit theirs and tell them what to change.
That split matters more than it sounds, and the rest of this page is built on it. There is a document side of construction arboriculture and a field side. The documents are advice, and they live on our consulting page. This page is the tangible half: the work performed on your site.
What we actually do on a construction site
Six things:
- Tree protection fencing around the root zones the plan set preserves — the one item on this list that belongs to construction work and nowhere else.
- Mulch over exposed root zones. It comes from our own yard, made out of our own pruning and removal work.
- Air-spading — utility trenches, pier holes, and soil decompaction inside a protected root zone.
- Deep-root fertilization for trees carrying construction stress.
- Pruning for equipment clearance and damage repair.
- Permitted removals, with the documentation the permit requires.
Every one of those is a physical act. Nothing on the list is a document — that is the line, and it is Keith’s: “It is advice versus tangible services.” A developer buying a mitigation plan or a canopy impact assessment is buying advice, and that work sits with our consulting arborists. The same developer’s protection fencing is a tangible service and it sits here.
Five of the six are things we sell as their own services anyway. This page is not a separate catalogue — it is our existing services sequenced around a build.
Pruning on a site is the one where less is the answer
Real tree preservation during construction is three things: mulch the area if it does not have good vegetative cover, fence off a large area of the root zone so it does not get compacted or damaged, and limit pruning so you do not destroy the vitality of the tree.
That third one is a service we sell, and we are telling you to hold it down. A build already takes a chunk of the root system and a section of the canopy off the tree, and degrades the soil it is living in — a bigger fight, fought from a weaker position. Pruning past what the work actually requires adds to that. Equipment clearance, damage repair, the branch that is genuinely in the way: that is the job. Our crews work to ANSI A300 and ANSI Z133 standards.
The tree protection plan belongs to your design team
This distinction is worth being precise about, because the words point at the wrong object. What the City accepts as a tree protection plan is not a separate arborist report. It is the tree protection specs — fences, mulch, plywood, air-spading — drawn onto the building plans. That plan set is the architect’s or the engineer’s.
Auditing that plan set is consulting work, and the output of it goes back to the design team to incorporate. We do not issue the plan.
In Keith’s experience the plan typically revolves around two rules, and they are not the same rule:

The critical root zone is sized by the tree’s trunk diameter, so it is different for every tree and the local requirements differ by jurisdiction. A tree survey is not ours to originate
A tree survey is produced by a state registered surveyor, and we do not originate one — what we do is audit it. That audit is consulting work, and the differences between a survey, an audit and the other objects that get called by those names are set out there.
We provide tree data in formats compatible with CAD and GIS software, and we attend design meetings when they are needed.
Why a build waits on a tree contractor
Here is the diagnosis, in Keith’s words, and it is the whole reason this page exists:
The construction site process is a hurry up and wait system. The process of construction is a sequence of events, and they have to go in order to a certain extent. And when a builder is ready for a process, they need it done quick so they can get on to the next process. This is where we shine.
The cost of a tree contractor on a build is not the invoice. It is the days the build is blocked waiting on one.
And the reason the tree protection role goes slow is not that any single task is hard. On a given site we will often need to install protection fences, spread mulch, air-spade a utility trench, and deep-root fertilize the trees — and sometimes bring a small machine to move material around. “There’s a lot of pieces to that puzzle.” Each of those pieces is a trip, a rental or a run to a materials supplier unless it is already on the truck — so doing all of it in one visit means carrying all of it, and that is what our fleet is arranged to do.
So the fleet answer here is about flexibility, not size. Two pieces of it carry the argument:
- The fence trailer stays loaded. Sixteen-foot tandem utility trailer, custom centre mount holding our sixteen-foot handy panels and the T-posts. “We can hook a truck up to it and be ready to install fences.” No load-out, no staging trip.
- One body carries a spray rig and an air compressor together. A single three-hundred-gallon Switch-N-Go body with a Kaeser M58u compressor mounted alongside it, so “one truck can do the air spading and provide the deep root fertilization.” Two services, one truck, one trip. Our larger six-hundred-gallon sprayer is a separate body and carries no compressor — the bigger tank is not the one that wins this argument.
Around those, the Switch-N-Go system lets us put whatever tools the site needs on the truck, and dump bodies, dump trailers and machine haulers mean mulch and a small machine arrive with everything else. Materials sit stocked in our own yard, so a supplier run does not happen on the builder’s clock.
Keith’s arithmetic on what that buys:
For one project, a two or three man crew can take two trucks and have the fence trailer, air spade, air compressor, a fertilization rig, a load of mulch/compost and a small machine to help move the material around, all in one visit. … We leave the shop, go straight to the job, and can get a very complex construction site job completed in one day with one small crew.
Read the “can” in that sentence the way he said it. Sites differ and some of them take longer; it describes what the fleet makes possible, not a turnaround we are promising you. The durable part is the shape: the pieces arrive together instead of one truck at a time, on a schedule where arriving together is the entire point.
Working inside a root zone without cutting it up
The significance of the air-spade is simple — it moves soil without cutting roots, or the pipes and wires in the ground with them. That opens up two jobs on a construction site that otherwise force a compromise.
Utility trenching inside a protected root zone. If a contractor needs to install a utility inside a protected root zone, the trench can be air-spaded so the significant roots are left behind. In the City of Austin this is a known technique that allows trenching within a tree’s protective root zone while still meeting ordinance compliance specifications. Keith’s read on the rest of the region: other municipalities nearby are less sophisticated in their ordinance review and compliance process, and some specifically allow it. It is good arboriculture regardless — Austin is the outlier in that it is a recognized process.
Pier holes for foundations, fences and decks, on the same principle. The builder-facing benefit is what happens when we find something: “If we run into a root, we’re able to relocate the pier a small amount, typically not a problem for the engineers drawing the plans.” A root found with air is a conversation with the engineer. A root found with an auger is a damaged tree and an argument.
Ground protection where traffic has to cross the root zone. On one project Keith worked with David Carroll of LZT Architects, the design successfully avoided breaching the half CRZ of a heritage tree — but the contractors still needed a few feet of access around the edge of the new building, which meant working on top of it. The builder put down a stage of CRZ ground protection: an eight-inch layer of mulch directly on the natural grade, with a stage made of 2x4 sleepers attached to plywood. The stage buffers foot traffic off the root zone and lets the crews do their job.
We do install those stages sometimes. Many times the builder will have their other subs do it, and that is a perfectly normal way for it to happen — we are describing the specification, not claiming the task.
Checking that the protection is still there
A protection plan is only worth the fencing that is actually standing on the day the excavator arrives. Fences get moved, mulch gets pulled out of a protected root zone, and nobody on site set out to do it. We sell periodic visits through the build to walk the site and check the measures are still in place — how often is a question for the job, not something to promise from a page.
The part that decides it happens after the build
The most useful thing we can tell a builder or an owner is that construction damage is not an injury. It is a slow war.
The problems aren’t acute, they’re long-term.
A build takes a vigorous, healthy tree, removes a chunk of the root system and a section of canopy, and then asks it to compartmentalize those wounds and hold off decay — while it is less healthy, because the canopy came off, and in worse living conditions, because construction degrades the soil. A bigger fight, fought from a weaker position. The tree that dies years after the build did not die from the build. It lost a slow war that started then.
Which is why “it survived the build, so it’s fine” is the wrong test. Most tree deaths are not attributable to one thing. Construction damaged the tree, then somebody turned the irrigation off, then they put weed-and-feed down — it is usually a culmination of stresses that kills a tree, not just one. A lot of trees fight a good fight, and with a little help you can hedge your bets. That help is a tree care program — and it is a long game, not something you solve during the construction process. What it has to work with depends on how much root and canopy the build took, what condition the tree was in going into it, and what the soil and the site are like once the machines leave.
Two kinds of mitigation, and they are not interchangeable
Removal mitigation is what the City requires when a protected-size tree comes out: replacement trees planted on-site. The plan for it — what types of trees to plant and where — is a consulting deliverable; putting them in the ground is tree planting work.
Damage mitigation is what happens when a tree gets damaged inadvertently during construction — a fence taken down, mulch pulled out of a protected root zone, and root damage inside that breach. The mitigation services the City accepts typically must be tied to the type of damage that happened:

We perform the remedy the City accepts. We do not make a breach go away, and nobody should sell you that.
