I've Been Using Weed and Feed. Can My Tree Be Saved?
Sometimes, and there is a lot of luck involved in it. What decides it is when in the year the product went down, how many years it went down, and what the tree was doing when you started. The first course of action is the same either way, and it is free: stop.
That is the honest version of the answer, and the rest of this is what sits behind it — because if you are reading this in Central Texas, you have probably already noticed that nobody at the store told you any of it.
Why it hurts a tree at all: dose, volume, and timing
Here is the piece that explains everything else. A tree is basically just a very large weed. Broadleaf herbicide does not know the difference between the weeds in your lawn and the live oak standing in it, and the product goes down over the tree’s entire root zone, which is not a place you would ever choose to put it.
But that on its own does not tell you how much damage you did. New buds emerging in the spring almost immediately require photosynthesis to fuel the rest of their own leaf expansion. The leaves are not finished when they open — they have to power the last of their own growth. So a product that interferes with the tree’s ability to make sugar arrives at the single worst moment when it arrives at bud break.
Ruining a tree’s new foliage at the beginning of the year leaves it with a crippled canopy for the entire growing season. Not dead. Crippled, and then asked to do it again next spring.
Turn the bag over before you decide how worried to be
There are two different chemistries sold as weed and feed, and they do not do the same thing to your tree. Turn the bag over before you decide how much trouble you are in.
If the active ingredient is atrazine, the product works by blocking photosynthesis directly — it is a photosystem II inhibitor, which is the technical name for shutting down the sugar-making process in any susceptible plant that takes it up. Roots are a documented route in, which is how a product you applied to your lawn ends up in your tree. This is the formulation sold for St. Augustine, and St. Augustine is the dominant home lawn grass in Austin — so this is the likely bag if yours came off a pallet here.
If the active ingredients are 2,4-D, dicamba and MCPP, the product is a synthetic auxin. It works as a growth regulator rather than a starvation agent, and the injury shows up as distorted, cupped, malformed growth instead of yellowing.
Different mechanism, same conclusion about timing. Whichever bag you bought, the worst time to put it down was when the tree was pushing new leaves.
Why summer is the exception in Central Texas
This part is worth knowing because it may be the reason your tree is still standing.
- Early spring, at bud break — the worst case. The tree is most dependent on the exact process the product is interfering with. This is where severe damage comes from.
- Summer. Often less damage, and for a reason that is specific to here: in a Central Texas summer our trees are somewhat dormant anyway. Water is scarce and temperatures sit above the threshold where photosynthesis happens, so the tree was not making much sugar for the product to interrupt.
- Fall. Not great, but survivable. The leaves are fully developed and the tree has already had some part of the year to function normally, and a tree can tolerate some part of the year being poor energy production.
Notice which two of those are the seasons the product is easiest to buy. Walk into a big-box store in the spring or in the early part of the fall and the weed and feed is on pallets out at the front — in front of the door, or right behind it when you walk in, prominently placed. Those weed and feeds are tree poison in a bag, and people who do not know better think they are making a great lawn while they are taking down the trees at the same time. You were not careless. You were set up.
How many years, and what the tree was doing when you started
Two things beyond timing move the answer, and the second one gets missed.
Frequency and consistency. In thirty years of looking at these lawns, what we see is that one careful, well-timed application probably will not hurt, and a healthy tree normally tolerates a single application with little or no visible sign of stress. What kills trees is chronic, whole-root-zone, wrong-season dosing — the same treatment year after year. Two applications in a single season will normally start to show in the canopy. A poorly timed application of a broadleaf herbicide puts a tree at risk of dying; doing it every spring is how the risk gets collected.
What the tree was doing when you started. Ask yourself which of these you are:
Are you new to the property, where all the trees were already established and you have given them a herbicide application they had never had before? Or is this a brand new home with a brand new landscape, where the trees just got stuck in the ground and they are trying to establish at the same time you are poisoning them?
Those are different problems. Herbicide near the tree is one of the exclusions on our tree planting warranty.
And it is almost never the only thing going on. Most tree deaths are not attributable to one cause. Construction damaged the tree, then somebody turned the irrigation off, then the weed and feed went down. It is usually a culmination of stresses that kills a tree, not just one thing — which is discouraging right up until you notice the useful half of it. If death is cumulative, so is recovery. You do not have to fix everything. You have to start subtracting.
What to do now
This is what we would work through. Stopping aside, none of the work is a prerequisite for any of the rest — do what you can, in whatever order you can do it.
1. Stop the poisoning. This is first and it is free. Nothing else you do will outrun continuing applications. If a lawn service handles your yard, this is a conversation with them, not with yourself — the spring application is on their calendar whether or not it is on yours.
2. Get the watering consistent. Consistent irrigation is the first of the pillars of tree care, and there are two laws to it: volume and consistency. An abrupt change is the worst thing you can do to a tree, so if the irrigation went off at some point during all of this, the fix is not a heroic week of watering — it is getting back to a steady volume and staying there. The deliberate soaking that goes with the compost is a different thing and not a change to the routine: it is a targeted leaching technique with its own drainage condition.
3. Compost, and water to leach the soil. Compost is really the main thing. A layer across the root zone — not a ring around the trunk, the whole area under the canopy out to the drip line, roughly the extent of the branches, but kept back off the root flares at the base — plus a deliberate soaking to move product down and out of the rooting zone. Half an inch to an inch deep, over turf or over mulched beds either way, once or twice a year, and the good windows are February to March and September to October. Where the ground under the tree is aggregate or decomposed granite rather than turf or beds, this is not the technique and we have to look for alternative options. The failure we see is under-doing it. This is also something we do: a compost application is part of our tree care services and can be bought on its own, with nothing else attached, and sometimes it is the starting point we recommend with a feeding regimen added when it is needed.
⚠️ That second half comes with a condition, and it is not optional: it requires that the site drains. Not everybody can use this technique. If you have somewhere water sits after a rain, you are not leaching anything, you are creating a second problem on top of the first one. Look downhill for whatever is making water pool before you decide you have good drainage. Where the ground does not move water, the soaking is not your technique — and soil that will not take water is the case soil restructuring is for: tilling it so air and water can penetrate, and working organic matter down into it without tearing up the roots.
4. A feeding regimen. It can help, and it works when it is timed to what the tree is doing — early spring while the new foliage can still absorb through the leaf, and fall, when there is no shoot growth left to fund and the tree moves everything into root development. Fall is the most important treatment of the year for exactly that reason. What does not work is putting nitrogen in the ground at no particular time and walking away as though the problem is solved.
5. Wait, and keep watching. Where good cultural practices turn a declining tree around, it happens over one to three years. For a tree in that condition there are very few situations where you produce a visible improvement in under a year, and a sick tree is a monitoring problem as much as a treatment problem. That first year is mostly the tree not getting worse, which does not feel like progress and is. A healthy tree that took a single application is a different case, and generally resumes normal function once the product is out of it.
Our take: subtract the stressor, and look below ground
In thirty years of working on Central Texas trees, we find that ninety percent of the time the real problem is below ground rather than in the canopy, and this is a clean example of it. The canopy is where you noticed something. The soil is where it happened and where it gets fixed.
Which is also why, when what you are looking at is a fading canopy, nobody can tell you from a photograph whether it was the weed and feed. Yellowing that goes to browning, small leaves, a canopy losing density, tip dieback — that is the same picture you get from cut roots, from bad drainage, from drought, from construction three years ago. Those symptoms do not carry the diagnosis. What points at herbicide is the history, and you already have that part: you know what went on the lawn and roughly when.
The pillars of tree care, in order, are consistent irrigation, no chemical weed control, compost across the root zone out to the drip line, and a timed feeding regimen. Note what is not on that list. Pruning is not in the top four, and neither is anything you can buy in a bag at the front of the store.
Avoiding weed and feed is the single best and cheapest thing you can do for your trees. You are literally talking about not spending money in order to do some good, and we sell none of it. The reason we run a tree care program anyway is not that the fertilizer is a silver bullet — it is that it puts somebody on your property multiple times a year to confirm the watering is right, to turn the irrigation up in the hot season, and to remind you in March, before the bag gets opened. Homeowners do not fail from a lack of information. They fail because nobody is there at the moment the correction matters.
One question comes before all of it, and for some trees it changes the answer. Before diagnosing what is wrong with a tree, we want a prognosis: does this tree have a chance long term? That starts with the species and its genetic ceiling, not only with how the tree looks right now. A hackberry lives about fifty years in a best case, so a hackberry with a severe problem at year twenty-five was never going to make it another hundred either way. Sometimes the honest answer is no, and the money belongs in the replacement rather than the rescue — tear it off like a Band-Aid, because the sooner a new tree is in the ground, the sooner you have the canopy you actually want.
