All About Bradford Pears
Most Bradford pears start having significant failures by the time they’re fifteen years old. If you’re lucky they may go to twenty. It starts happening pretty quick, and once a section has split out, the tree is not going to regrow or regain form. It’s going to continue falling apart. So the decision in front of you isn’t really a medical one. It’s whether you can live with what you’re looking at.
Most of the calls I get about Bradford pears come after a section of the tree has broken out and fallen apart. That’s pretty typical behavior for the species. Nobody is planting them here anymore and they’re not really available in the market, so almost everyone reading this inherited one, and it just did the thing they do. They also self-propagate, so a pear in your yard didn’t necessarily get planted there by anybody at all. Inherited with the house or come up on its own, it isn’t a tree you picked — which is why the question on this page isn’t whether it was a good buy. It’s what to do with the one you’ve got.

- Availability: essentially none here, and that’s fine
The real problem is that they just don’t last that long
The real problem with them is that they just don’t last that long. That’s the whole objection, and it’s worth saying plainly before anything about branch structure, because the structure is the mechanism and the longevity is the consequence you actually live with.
Fifteen years is not how long the tree lives. It’s how long it holds together. The tree is capable of producing viable foliage for more than fifteen years — this is typically just how long it will last before it begins to fall apart. That’s what makes it confusing for owners: the tree looks healthy right up until a section of it is on the lawn. Health and vigor were never the constraint. Structure was.
Set that against what a good tree should give you in Central Texas. Cedar elm, Mexican sycamore, red oak, eastern red cedar: sixty to eighty years, and closer to a hundred if you get lucky. A native escarpment live oak will run three hundred. Fifteen is a different category of number, and it’s the one you needed before deciding how much to spend on the tree.
None of which makes it a bad plant for what it was sold as. Back when you could still buy one, a Bradford pear was a reasonable choice if you wanted a temporary, short-lived tree and had adequate room for growth — a minimum of ten to fifteen feet of clearance in all directions. That figure is the room to give one at planting, not the size it finishes at — they get to double that or more. The problem is that almost nobody was told they were buying a temporary tree, so the failure at year fifteen arrives as a shock rather than as the end of a plan.
What to do first, and the question I ask before anything else
The obvious work is to clean up the mess. That isn’t a decision, it’s just the job in front of you — get the broken material down safely.
The next question is the one people don’t expect, and I ask it before I assess anything: how do you feel about the way the tree looks now? If it offends you to look at it in this shape, we should go ahead and just take the tree down. There’s no point in assessing anything first. The tree is not going to regrow or regain form, so if you already hate looking at it, no assessment is going to change that answer.
If you can live with it, then I’ll start looking at how poor the remaining structural defects are. On a Bradford that’s typically included bark where multiple codominant stems come together at the same spot. If they’re severe and it’s obvious the tree is literally waiting to fall apart again, I’ll say so — and I’ll want to know what’s underneath the part that’s going to go.
In short: I give people the options, and I ask them how they feel about what they’re looking at. They’re not my trees. What changes the conversation is what’s underneath — if there’s a hazardous target under the part that’s going to go, that’s a different conversation, and I’ll say so.
Why it won’t grow back
This one is worth understanding, because the usual storm-damage advice doesn’t apply here and people get their hopes up.
When a deciduous tree loses a limb in a storm, the right move is usually to make a clean cut behind the break and leave the stub, rather than taking the limb back to the trunk. You weren’t trying to remove that limb. Leave as much as reasonably can be left, and the tree will push sucker growth off that stub and rebuild canopy. Cutting it back to the collar throws that away.
That matters in a lot of circumstances. It doesn’t matter with a Bradford pear, and the reason is mechanical. The numerous branches that originate at a central point cause structural defects that lead to the splitting apart of the tree. Bradford pears have a growing habit where there are many codominant stems that originate from one spot, just probably four to five feet above the ground, and between those stems you get included bark — bark trapped in the union instead of wood. Eventually they break apart. And the way codominant stems with included bark break, there’s not a stump left for things to grow from. The union tears open and the stem peels away.
What you’re left with isn’t a stub. It’s a gash in the trunk. That’s the thing to look for if your tree has already dropped a piece — and there’s nothing there for the tree to grow from. If there’s decay in it by the time you’re looking, that’s easy to read backwards: the decay followed the failure, it didn’t cause it.
That’s just the nature of the beast with Bradford pears. It’s also worth knowing that this is a product of the way that they’re grown in the nursery. The defect arrives with the tree.
If your tree is still standing, go look at the spot four to five feet up where all the stems converge. That’s the union everything on this page is about, and it’s worth knowing where it is before somebody quotes you on the tree.
If you want to keep it anyway
Plenty of people have an emotional attachment to a tree, or just really don’t want to lose it. That’s a legitimate reason and I’m not going to argue anybody out of it. There is something real we can do.
For the few people who really get ahead of maintenance and make a really substantial effort, we can do some pretty aggressive reduction pruning and postpone that process for a number of years. The word is postpone, not save, and I’d rather be blunt about that than sell you a rescue.
It has a cost, and it isn’t only money: you have to not mind the tree looking a little bit awkward. Reduce a pear hard enough to matter and it will look reduced. If the reason you’re keeping it is that you like how it looks, this option and that reason are in tension, and that’s worth sitting with before you spend anything.
This also isn’t a treatment you can buy once and forget. It only works for owners who stay ahead of maintenance and make a really substantial effort. If nobody is going to look at the tree again until the next thing breaks, the pruning won’t buy what it’s meant to buy.
If your tree hasn’t dropped anything yet, you’re in a different position than everybody else on this page, and it’s the one place here where the work is preventive rather than cleanup. Pruning to promote more upright growth can add to the life of the tree, and the window for it is the first fifteen years.
Diseases: fire blight and bacterial leaf scorch
For the most part, Bradford pears are highly resistant to disease and insects. There aren’t any major insect problems and only two diseases commonly get into them.
Fire blight needs to be caught early to prevent significant damage. It starts at the twig ends and progresses back toward the main stem. The dead foliage will be a very dark brown and will remain attached to the tree, which is the tell — dead leaves that don’t drop.
Bacterial leaf scorch looks different. The leaves turn a light brown and fall from the tree, similar to normal leaf drop, which is why it gets missed. There isn’t an effective treatment for it.
Worth keeping in perspective: neither of these is what ends a Bradford pear. Structure is.
Replacing a Bradford pear in Central Texas
One practical note about the space the pear is leaving. They grow fast and, at full size in a small space, block virtually all the sun. If the tree was overbearing on that spot, don’t replace it with something that will be overbearing there in ten years — fifteen feet from the house is a reasonable default, and a large canopy tree wants twenty to twenty-five.
Then think about what you actually liked. A Bradford offered showy white flowers in the spring, some fall color, and fast shade.
- If it was the flowers, you’re shopping for an ornamental, and the honest frame is that an ornamental here is a twenty-year asset with a planned end. Mexican plum, Mexican redbud — not the eastern one — chitalpa, althea. Site them properly or you waste the pick: Mexican plum wants creek-grade water, althea needs full sun or you get no flowers, and chitalpa is worth asking for early because it’s hard to source. It’s going to look great for a while, you’re going to cut it down, and you can regrow a new one quickly.
- If it was the speed, Mexican sycamore is the one fast-growing tree that’s legitimately a good tree — sixty to eighty years, good structure, low pruning need, no surface-root problem.
- If you want the shade sooner and closer, a ten- to twelve-foot crepe myrtle set about five feet off a patio gives you real protection from the southwest sun almost immediately. Some crepe myrtles max out at two feet and some grow to forty, so the whole decision is picking one that matures at the height you want and then staying out of its way.
The pear’s stump isn’t a problem for the new tree, by the way. Grinding is the right answer in the vast majority of cases, and moving the new planting two or three feet over is normally plenty. See tree planting for how we handle the rest of it.
Our take
A Bradford pear that has dropped a section has told you what it’s going to do. My job at that point isn’t to talk you into anything. It’s to make sure you know three things: it won’t regain its form, it will keep coming apart, and there’s a pruning option that delays it if you’re the kind of owner who’ll actually keep up with it.
What I won’t do is manufacture a reason. The honest case for removal is easy to make on this species, which is exactly why it’s worth saying that the scam in this trade isn’t bad cutting — it’s bad diagnosis. If somebody looks at a Bradford that hasn’t failed and tells you it has to come out today, ask them what they saw.
Past that, the goal was never saving every tree. It’s having good healthy canopy covering the yard. Don’t let emotions make you try to save every single tree. If it’s not a good candidate for preservation, tear it off like a Band-Aid — the sooner you get a new tree in the ground, the sooner you’re going to get where you want to be.
And if you want to keep it, that can be your call — but it turns on what’s underneath, not on the tree’s condition. If the next piece to come out lands in the grass and doesn’t hurt anybody, keep it. Temper your expectations, don’t put too much emotional baggage on the line, and see what happens; my clients chose their own risk tolerance. If it’s over a driveway, a patio or a playscape, that’s a different conversation and I’ll say so.
The difference there isn’t only how high up the failure is. Somebody happening to walk under the tree at the exact moment it comes apart is unlikely. A driveway, patio furniture or a playscape is fixed — if the limb hangs over it, it gets hit, more or less for certain. And those are precisely the things that invite people, and children, to be sitting under them. So what you’re weighing is near-certain impact with low consequences against possible impact with catastrophic ones.
